How to harness the power of Twitter to market your business
Do people really need to know what people or organizations are doing right now? Individuals post what cereal they had for breakfast, what they are currently thinking, and which website they just visited. Is this really a sign of an advanced society? Frankly, it doesn't matter because Twitter has become a part of today's society. In a very short period of time, social networking sites like Twitter have woven themselves into the social consciousness. Could Twitter disappear as quickly as it exploded on the scene? Certainly. However, for now Twitter is a major player in mass communication and businesses need to capitalize on it's popularity. With that in mind, here are a few thoughts on how businesses can harness the power of Twitter to market their products or services.
Technological realities
Marketing is about going where the people are, and for now many individuals are on Twitter. People can market their organizations by utilizing the short bursts of information that are presented through Twitter. This means that people have to figure out how to summarize and "hook" the reader through punchy text and links to relevant sites. Granted, simply having a Twitter account does not guarantee that people will come flocking to the site of the business. Twitter users may be online, but they do not necessarily have money or interest in certain products.
Networking
Another aspect about Twitter that must be realized is that it is an opportunity to network with new customers and affiliates. Again, setting up a Twitter account does not mean that customers will start checking for posts on a regular basis. Companies still have to tell people they have a Twitter account. In addition, they have to keep it updated with interesting information and they have to actively recruit people to "follow" them. Over time, followers may multiply and the site may be a conduit for information. However, this still takes time and it may require some "old-fashioned" sales and promotion techniques.
Keeping things in mind
Finally, companies have to keep in mind that Twitter has it's limits and that it may not be around forever. The Twitter site is very popular in some circles, but that does not mean that it has universal applications. Some people simply want to interact on a personal level in social networking sites, and they do not want to be peppered with advertisements and sales presentations. Therefore, companies should be careful that they do not saturate their customer base with unsolicited information. If people feel that their site is polluted with uninvited guests, they may move on to other locations and the opportunity for marketing may be lost. Therefore, people who want to market their companies should go after current trends, but they should careful not to smother their customer base and lose out on business opportunities.
