A Silicon Valley recruiter was on the phone to a long-term applicant, a senior engineer at a major Tele communications company whom they had placed there years earlier, when the line suddenly went dead.
The head-hunter rang the Engineers direct number again, no connection. So he called the company’s main switchboard and was answered by the receptionist.
OH!, she explained, “We’ve just had a major downsizing and he’s one of the names on the list, that means his telephone, voicemail, email and all means of communication to him will be cut off”
Undeterred, the recruiter rang the engineer on his mobile phone to find him sat at his desk wondering what was going on and trying to get his phone to work. Unfortunately, he was the last to know, others knew, even outside the company, that he was to receive his pink slip, yet incredibly he didn’t! He was now out of a job!

With more than 20,000 layoffs announced across the UK this year, including people from the Estate Agency Industry, JJB Sports etc., are causing many people to look into buying their own franchise, from sandwich shops to digital photo-arts businesses. The upsurge in applications for franchises during the current volatile economic times is typical of the franchise industry, which generated over $1 trillion in 2007 and provides independence from the corporate world
